[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.! Death of an Old Colonist. Wanganui, To-day. Major Nixon, an old resident, died at 2 this morning. He arrived at Wellington in the ship London in 1840, holding an order for the sale of land from the New Zealand Company. He came here in 1841 and took an active part in the war, being made captain at the outbreak. He was made a J.P. by Governor Hobson. He leaves 3 tons and 4 daughters, all grown np. The Minister of Public Works. New Plymouth, To-day. Mr Mitchelson does not visit New Plymouth, but has gone on from Stratford to Wellington to meet Major Atkinson. Both will probably leave here for Auckland in the Hinemoa. Fatal Accident. Mastbbton, To-day. Jas. Wood, the driver of a truck on the Masterton railway works, slippec while detatching the horse this morning and the loaded truck passed over his arm thigh. He died from the shock within half an hour. He arrived from the South Island la February last, and was a young man and single. [The victim of the'above is the brother Andrew Wood, of A«hburton. The deceased'was known for’several years as a steeplechase rider in this district.— Ed. Gj An Important Case. Dunedin, To-day. - In Ward v. National Bank, the jury answered all the issues in the plaintiffs favor.
