A young man named Ward, a son of Judge Ward, while attempting to jump from the North Shore ferry steamer to the wharf fell on the stringers of the wharf and was picked up insensible. Found Dead. W. B. Longbridge, advertising agent, was found dead in bed at the Olanricarde Hotel He had been drinking rather heavily, and took two sleeping draughts last night The Frozen Meat Trade. The ship Opawa has arrived from London after a passage of 82 days. The Opawa and Turakina go South to load with frozen meat One loads at Lyttelton, and che other at Napier. Botli are fitted with a Baslam refrigerator. The Opawa brings 22 purebred sheep for Canterbury. Three died on the passage. Fire. Mastbbton To-day. A six roomed cottage, owned by Mr C, Gifford, of Napier, was burned with all its contents yesterday afternoon. The origin of the fire is unknown. The house wse occupied by a man named Holloway and his family. His wife heard a crackling noise while in the bedroom, and ran into the kitche 1 to ascertain the causa. The heat over head was so great that she went pat end saw the roof in flames. The
furniture was uninsured, and the house was insured in the New Zealand Office for L 126, Wesleyan Conference. Wbiumqtom, To-day. t The Wesleyan Conference met again this morning, when business of a preliminary character was transacted. A question of a ministerial character was reported, Viz., that two probationers for the ministry in Otago had resigned. On the motion of the Secretary, their names were omitted from the minutes of the Conference. Consideration of the financial obligation involved for the collegiate training occupied the Conference, and some correspondence between the Rev Joseph Berry and Bishop Nevil], of the Episcopalian Church, was read, farther consideration of which was postponed till the meeting of the - United Conference on Thursday. A Coming Banq.uet. The Directors of the New Zealand Shipping Op have issued invitations to a large number of leading citizens to dinner on-board the steamer Aorangi on Monday evening. A New Steamer. Dunedin, T »-day. The Governor proceeded to the Lakes this morning. The Sounds' Excursion. The Tarawera sailed for the Sounds with 84 passengers. Presbyterian Union. The- principal business transacted by the Presbyterian Synod yesterday was the discussion of a report from the Committee on union, recommending that immediate steps bet taken to' effect union with the Northern Church. After a.spirited debate a motion by Professor Salmond, affirming that union should he effected without delay, was carried by 30 to 24 Insurances. The Balional Insurance had an. entire line of LIO.OOO on the steamer Lismore, hot were re-insured for L 9.500, of which the Booth Britbh, United, Union, and Colonial had each 150.0, the rest - eing among Australian and foreign offices.
