In its issue this morning, the Daily News, in referring to the proposed Victorian four million loan, doubts whether it will be successfully floated. Pire. An outbreak of fire occurred at No. 67, Cornhill, on the premises occupied by Messrs Silver, and now (6 a.m.) is increasing rapidly. A Good Dividend. The Union Bank of Australia has declared a dividend for the past halfyear at the rate of 18 per cent per annum, and carries forward £.55,000 to the reserve fund. The Mails. The Homeward mrils via Brindisi, dated Melbourne, Dec. 6tb, were delivered yesterday. Monetary and Commercial. Consols have advanced to ioij£. New Zealand securities remain at last quotations. Adelaide wheat, ex store, 445; New Zealand ditto, 36s to 425. Adelaide flour, ex store, 31s. Australian tallow—Best beef, 39s fid; best mutton, 445. Abandoned. Cairo, Jan. 16. The Minister for War has abandoned a journey which he proposed to make to Khartoum in order to supervise the evacuation of the town by the Egyptian garrison. The fire which broke out in Cornhill th : s morning caused .the destruction of Messrs Silver and Co.’s buildings, the whole premises being completely gutted. Through the efforts of the firemen the flames were prevented from spreading to the adjoining buildings. The War in the Soudan. Cairo, Jan. 17. The latest news to hand from the Soudan states that the insurgents have cut off any possible retreat of the Egyptian garrison from Sennaar, and have blocked the river a mile below Duem. The New Archbishop. Bomb, Jan. 17.
