MrF. McOafferty’s b g ISimrod, 4yrs, list (Mr Knight) 0 Betting—2 to 1 agst Comet and Digby Grand ;4to 1 Lady Florence. Scout was scratched. The lot were got away to a fair start, Lady Florence going off with the lead, followed by Digby Grand with Comet tnird, Nimrod and Fairwater bringing up the rear. This order was maintained until the back cf the course was reached, when Comet came up, and on rounding the turn the three leaders could have been covered with a blanket, the two other horses being hopelessly beaten. Half a mile from homo Lady Florence fell back slightly, and Comet challenged Digby Grand, and after racing neck and neck the former went away and won as he liked, Lady Florence coming fast at the finish and robbing Digby Grand of fecond place. The totalisator showed 370 investors, 105 on the winner, dividend L 3 2. Thb Post Stakes (Handicap), of 15 sovs; nomination, 1 sov, to be made to the Secretary immediately after the Ladies’ Purse is run ; acceptance, free, to be notified within ten minutes of declaration of weights ; Imile. District horses
only. Mr X. Quill’s Roseneath 1 Mr T. Quill’s Lady Florence 2 Mr H, Brimhle’s Polly 3 Idalia, King Philip, Eclipse and Jennie also ran. This race was run in the rain, and the issue was never in doubt, Roseneath coming away from her companions when called upon, and winning easily with plenty in hand.
Second Day. The weather for the second day’s racing was in every way equal to that of yesterday. The attendance of the public was good, though it was scarcely to be expected that so many would ba present as on the Cup day. The usual booths and games on the course are doing a thriving business, but there is very little straight out betting, though some money is being wagered in doubles and trebles. Before the racing commenced notices were posted that Barbary and Why Not were scratched for the hurdles, and Johnny Faulkner for the R.C. Handicap. The last-mentioned horse has been purchased by Mr T. Quili from Dan O’Brien for L 175. Melbourne was sold, after the Hurdles, to Mr M. H. Smith for a satisfactory price. The first race commenced punctually at one o’clock. H indicap Hurdle Race, of 60 sovs; over eight flights of hurdles, about 3ft Gin high ; nomination, 2 sovs ; acceptance, 2 sovs; two miles. Mr J. Kenyon’s b g Wildboy, aged, 10st (J. Cotton) 1 Mr D. O’Brien’s brg Melbourne, aged, 9at 101 b (Wood) 2 Mr .B. Haughton’s b g Hercules, Gyrs... ... ... ...(Lyford) 3 Mr H, Goodman’s b g Sunlight, aged, 9st 101 b (T. Cotton) 0 Betting—s to 4 agst Hercules and Melbourne; 5 to 2 Wildboy; 5 to 1 Sunlight. Barbary (list) ' and Why Not (lOat 91b) were scratched. The field were got away at the first attempt to a good start, Hercules going away, but unfortunately for his chance of winning ran round the first hurdle. Melbourne then assumed the lead, Wildboy close up aud Sunlight some lengths to the rear. These three safely negotiated the next obstacle, but Hercules who was a longjway behind knocked the hurdle, down in getting over. Passing the stand Melbourne and Wildboy were still together, Sunlight about 200 yards behind. This order was maintained round the course, and turning into the straight Wiidboy improved his lead and although Melbourne was ridden hard he failed to get within four lengths of Wildboy, who came in an easy winner. Neither Hercules nor Sunlight were placed, although the former materially improved his position at the finish. The totalisator regijtored 382 investors, 88 on the winner, dividend L 3 18a.
Racing Club Handicap, of 75 so vs; nomination, 2 sovs; acceptance, 2 sovs; If miles. Mr P. Butler’s br h Emir Bey, syrs 7si 91fc (including 21b overweight) (Butler) 1 Mr A. Stead’s b c Sir Bedivere, 3yrs, Bst 11b (Watt.e) 0
Batting-6 to 4 on Violin; 3 to 1 on ;he field. Johnny Faulkner and Digby
Grand were scratched. Sir Bedivero showed some bad temper when making his preliminary canter and starting kicking vigorously, Wattie having to apply the whip before the colt was quieted. He pursued the sa e tactics at the start, wi’h the consequence that he was left behind at the post. The others got away well, Emir Bey taking a strong lead, Comet and Violin following, with Trumpeter fourth. This order was kept till round ng the turn at the back of the course, where Comet was laying on the leader’s quarters, and coming up the straight the two were racing together, and it seemed on the cards that the winner of the Ladies’ Purse yesterday was going to repeat his victory. About 200 yards from home White bad the whip out, but was unable to reach Emir Bey, who passed the post threequarters of a length ahead, the favorite ; being a bad third. Time—2min j The totalisator showed 403 investors, 70 j on the winner, dividend L 5 Bs. County Plate Handicap, of 40 sovs ; j nomination, 1 sov ; acceptance, 1 sov ; mites. District horses only. Mr A. Bozenberg’s b c Scout, Syrs, 7st 5Mb (including 12Mb overweight) (Williams) 0 Marchioness Neil and Rosoneath were scratched. Betting Even on Digby Grand. After Polly had taken a gallop on her own account, the horses got away well together, Shepherdess and Digby Grand going to the front. At the back of ihe course the horses spread out in single file, the two horses mentioned being first, and Lady Florence, Brenda and Polly following in that order. Bounding the turn home Brenda supplemented Lady Florence, and the favorite ran up to Shepherdess’s quarters, and coming up the straight the whip was out to both the leaders. The favorite, however, did not respond, and in spite of the excellent riding of Rudings, Shepherdess was landed a winner by ah >ut half a length. Brenda was a bad! third, just beating Lady Florence, Polly being next and Scout last. Time—2min 15£sec. There were 438 in the totalisator, being on the winner, dividend H 0 7s. Flying Handicap, of 50 sovs; nomination, 1 sov ; acceptance, 2 sovs ; f mile. Mr R. Bryan’s ch m Lady Dagworth, 4yrs, Cat 12lb, including 21b over-’ weight (W. White) 1 Mr T. Quill’s b m Miss King filly, 4yrs, Bst ... ... ... (Wattie) 2 Mr John Carter’s ch m Marchioness 1 Neil, 4yw, Bst (Rudings) 8 Mr P. McEvedy’s b g Trumpeter, syrs, 7st 71b (Williams) 0 I Miss King filly showed some bad temper at the post, and when the horses were let away it was to a decidedly bad start. Marchioness Neil rushed to the front, fol--1 lowed by Lady Dagworth, who was closely attended by the Miss King filly, ( Trumpeter bringing up the rear. Lady ’ Dagworth challenged the Marchioness on 1 rounding the home turn, and passed her , at the rails, a slashing race ensuing up 1 the straight, all the horses being under the whip. At a hundred yards ■ from the post the Cassivelaunus filly came 1 v.ith a tremendous rush, overhauled the Marchioness, and at the finish was only about a head behind Lady Dagworth. 1 Had the race been ten yards longer, or had Miss King filly not lost some six lengths at the start she would undoubtedly have won. The totalisator had 279 investors, 29 on the winner. DUNEDIN SPRING SPRING.
