SPORTING.

TRAINING NOTES. [by telegraph.] Christchurch, To-day, Very little work was done on the course this morning. A large number of horses were out who only did walking and cantering exercise. There is no alteration in the betting. “ Actoen’s” tips for to-morrow are as follows: — Free Handicap—Nonsense or Painter. Welcome Stakes—Liverpool, Ij Carlton or Marion, 2. New Zealand Cup—Cheviot, 1; Hippodamia, 2; Welcome Jack, 3. Hunter’s Flat Baca—'Jommissioner, 1; Bicoarton, 2. Welter—Rubina, L [special to press association.] [Received Nov. 5, 1.30 p ra J Melbourne, To-day.

It is blowing hard this morning, and the weather is dull and threatening. The dust is dreadful... Claptrap had a good gallop of two miles without shoes’, finishing in 3min 41sec. Recovery went twice round splendidly. Stockwell and Anglesey went the same distance, the former finished fast and having all the best of it. Despot went once round the course, and did the best gallop that has yet been seen round the tan, finishing in 2min 33sec. Aide-de-Camp and Nicholas had a strong gallop. Aide-de-Camp finished strongly. The last round was fin shed in 3min 46sec. Galina went a mile and three-quarters in grand style. The enquiry by the stewards into the circumstances connected with the running of Archie is considered to be moat important and it is probable that they will find that fraud-has been practised with reference to his running; and in the event of such being proved the stewards will declare all bets off should this be decided upon. It would seriously affect the bookmakers, as they have large nooks both on the Cup and Derby, in which Archie was picked for the latter race. Martini-Henri, the winner of the Derby, is backed in doubles with all the, horses remaining in the Cup.

Mr J. H. Aldridge’s b c Sardius (lata Emerald), by Emulation—Ruby ... 2 Mr R. Loe’a ch c Hurricane, by Countryman—Serenity 3 Butting—Even on Archie, 5 to 2 against Off Color, 6 to 1 against Sardius and Napier, 8 to 1 against the others. There was some difficulty in effecting a start, as Archie was very fractious at the post, but after three false starts he was the quickest in getting fairly off, with Martini-Henry and Hurricane close on his quarters, Off Color and Signor being close together behind, Little sister bringing up the rear. Passing the stand, Signor, Off Color, and Little Sister came to-

the front, and the latter led round the turn, Sardius being close on her quarter, with Off Color, Martini-Henry, Hurricane, Signor and Yernet following in the order named, Archie being last. Little sister held the lead past the bridge by a length, with Sardius and Off Color side by side next, followed by Signor, Yernet,

and Hurricane, Archie still bringing up the rear, app rently waning his chance. The horses preserved this order all albiig the back stretch of the course, and when passing the’ abbattoirs Little Sister held a clear load, followed by Off Color and Sardius a length behind, followed by Signor, Verpob. and ■ Hurricane together, Archie still being last. At the sheds Sardius made an effort, and showed in front, holding the lead along the training ground, with Off Color and Little

Sister next, Martini-Henry fourth. Archie raised the hopes of his supporters by making a rush along the far side of the course, but he quickly died away, the pace telling on him. On turning into the straight Martini-Henry passed 'ff Oolor and Little Sister, and challenged Sardine, who answered gamely, but at the d’stance Martini-Henry was in front, |and from that point the result was never in doubt. At the carriage paddock he drew clear away from Sardius, and landed a winner by three lengths, Sardius infront of Hurricane, who cameiftatttp the Straight.’ Off Color fourth',' Archie fifth. . Time; 2min 39afec, the‘"fastest hn’ThbSttT r by 2£seo. It was a splendid racb.aridfchd excitement was great. The win is a. very good one for.the bookraakers.butAcchie’a defeatjis Very hard bn the public*, aha his rider (Huxley) was groaned : at heavily av he went back to the scales. Archierii running is considered very auspicious, and Huxley was called before , tixa. i stewards. The explanation be gave .considered unsatisfactory, and a full investigation is to be held on Monday. Martini-Henry, the winner, is a New Zealand bred horse by Muskeg (he ''pro* v petty of the Auckland Stud Oompanyi fr: m whom the Hon J, White, of New South VVales, purchased him as a yearling for 1250 guinea*.
