METHVEN BACKS AND SPORTSNEW YEAR, 1884.

A meeting of the general -Committeefor carrying-out the • above, races,' fete., was held at the Methven Hotel on Friday last, the 2nd inst, the Vice-President, Mr Julian Jackson, in the chair. Apologies were read from Mr 0. A. A. Hardy (treasurer) and several other members for non-attendance, owing principally to prior engagements. The gentlemen present reported the progress they had made in collecting subscriptions towards the f inds, from which it appeared that the residents had most cordially supported the Methven annual gathering. A. letter was received from Messrs Hardy and Co., offering a cup, value Ll2 12s, for the races ; 1 1 be competed for by the residents in the Mount Hutt and South JRakaia Road Board Districts by horses that have not won a stake of more than LlO ; weight, list up.—Resolved -“That Masses Hardy and Co.’s offer be accepted with thanks:

Resolved—“ That the Working Commit tee consist of 15 members, five to form a quorum. The following gentlemen were elected as the Working Committee, viz.: —Messrs Jas. Murray, A. McFarlane, ; J. Jackson, J. Loudon, J. Gilchrist, H. Hitchcock, G. Farr, John Devery, W. H. Hussey, P. McCafferty, 6. Pocock, G. Coward, R. Patton, TV T. Jackson, W. Rouse, andj the president, vice-presi-dent, secretary, and treasurer ex officio. Resolved that the Working Committee be empowered to appoint officers, handicappers, and stewards for the meeting. Kesolved that the Secretary apply to last year’s treasurer for a statement of his accounts, after which the meeting closed, with a vote of thanks to the chairman. . • After the meeting closed the newly elected Working Committee held a meeting, when it was resolved that the secretary convene the next meeting by circular for Friday, the 16th inst., at 8 p.m.
