[PER PEERS ASSOCIATION.] The Nelson Gaoler. Nelson, To-day. ' It is reported that Mr Shallcrass, the gaoler here, is about to retire from that position. The Government are sending a chief warder in his place, and have granted him 12 months’ leave of absence, and he is to have a retiring allowance. Mr Shallcrass was chief of the Nelson police under the Provincial Government ifor; thirteen years, and he has held the office of gaoler for nine. The Salvationists. Wellington, To-day. “Major” Barker and Mrs Barker, of the Salvation Army, arrived by the steamer from Lyttelton at 1.15 this afternoon. They were met by the officers of the local Army and driven to the barracks, where -a formal welcome took place. To-morrow M« Barker will present the colors te the corps, and the event will be celebrated by a monster tea fight. A Narrow Escape. ; Dunedin, To-day. A ten-year old son of Chandler, light-house-keeper at Capo Saunders, fell over the cliffs 100 feet. The only injury he sustained was the breaking of one leg.
A Now Scheme. Messrs Oakden and Begg's ship canal scheme is attracting a good deal of attention. The cost is estimated at L 400.000.
