THE RABBIT PEST.

A very large meeting of sheep-farmers was held yesterday, to receive the reports of the committees appointed by the settlers in the Hawke’s Bay and Waipawa counties, > referring to the approaching invasion of the rabbit plague. 'l'ho report states that rabbits were on the immediate boundary of the province northward of the Akitio river, and recommended the erection of a rabbit-proof fence from the coast running inland 15 miles towards Wood Ville in the SeventyMile Bush. Another report recommended the erection of a fence, and condemned the line of the artificial boundary between Wellington and Hawke’s Bay provincial districts. It is estimated the cost of the fence will be L 3.000. Sheep farmers representing la million and a quarter of sheep, agreed to. a pay a farthing a head to defray the cost. All the sheep owners in the district will be asked to contribute. The Hawke’s Bay members have been re quest.*d to communicate with the Government wrh a view to secure assistance.
