Parleying with France is now proceeding in a spirit of friendship regarding the recent occurrence in Madagascar, and confidence is expressed that a stisfactory result wifi be attained. The hopes which have been entertained regarding the settlement of Zululand have hot been realised, but while avoiding ; gratuitous meddikig in that country, it was determined to maintain the fulfilment of

engagements entered into, and to secure the border and Natal from oppression. The working of the Transvaal Convention has not been satisfacfactory, but Ministers would shortly discuss the situation with the envoys who were about to arrive from that country. The revenue proved equal to the estimates. Agriculture has improved, and the state of trade was sound. The condition of Ireland has become better. The Land Act was in wide operation, and the anti-rent agitation had been broken. Agrarian outrages had decreased, and murder societies had been checked. *
