WRECK OF THE ALMA.
[by telegraph.] Auckland, To-day.
Captain James Patterson and the crew, consisting of six men, of the threemasted schooner Alma, arrived at Whangaroa in a small open boat on Friday last. They report the total wreck of their vessel on a coral reef three hundred miles from the coast of Queensland. The reef is only visible at high water, and is marked in the chart as the Elizabeth. The vessel struck at midnight, and next morning the barque Afton, bound for Portland (Oregon), hove in sight, and a signal was made. She boro down on them and took them on board, landing them on the coast of Mangonui. The Alma was on a voyage from Wanganui to Rockhampton, laden with timber. Had not the barque Afton so providentially appeared, the crew might have endured great hardship, as the fresh water was all spoilt with the salt. Captain Patterson and his crew speak highly of Captain Gilmor and the crew of the Afton for the kindness shown to them. The longboat, oars, sail, and compass were sold by auction on Tuesday the 21st inat, when they fetched L 7 11s.
