AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

Melbourne, August 7. A special meeting of the Irish National League of Victoria resolved that the thanks of the League be tendered to Mr Service for his action in regard to the informers’ case. At the annual meeting of the Victorian Racing Club, resolutions were passed in favor of legalising the totalisator, and deciding to use means to. attain that object. Mr Rignold has been playing a short season. He gave a farewell performance prior to his departure for England. A general meeting of the Governors and subscribers of the Melbourne Hospital took place, to consider some changes or administration. The meeting was very disorderly, and the speakers were unable to obtain a hearing. A Committee of the Zoological Gardens applied for permission to make a charge on Sunday the same as week days, or to close the Gardens on Sundays, as on account of free admission the place was overrun with larrikins, who do much mischief. Mr Berry, Chief Secretary, visited it last Sunday, and decided to provide increased police protection. The arrival of the Irish informers has been the general topic of interest during the past week, and nows of proceedings has been eagerly looked for. and it appears certain that their lives would be endangered if allowed to land. The new Postal Bill has been passed. Among other provisions, it authorises the issue of postal notes payable on demand up to 19s. The Victorian and New Sooth Wales Governments at last have come arrangement regarding the overland time table. Samuel Egan and Daniel Scanlon were sentenced to 10 years on the roads for robbing W. H. Topham, contractor, of L 1,450 in June last. It has transpired during the case that Egan assisted in the capture of the Wantabagery bushrangers some three years ago, and received a Government reward.

Gillott and Carr, the supposed Armidale bushrangers, were committed for trial, although the evidence was very conflicting. H.M.S. Nelson has arrived from the New Hebrides. .The Commodore had interviews with missionaries, and the result has not transpired. At Havannah, harbor he found the French men-of-war Bruat and Detress.
