More detailed reports concerning the murder of Carey shows that Carey’s wife and children were passengers on board the same vessel. O’Donnell is also a married man and was travelling with his wife and family. It is authoritatively stated that O’Donnell was an emissary of the American Fenians, who had despatched him by the steamer Melrose for the express purpose of assassinating Carey. Upon arrest, O’Donnell’s cabin was searched, and amongst the luggage in his possession an infernal machine was discovered. From this it is believed that if O’Donnell failed to kill Carey in any other manner he was commissioned to secure his object by the destruction of the vessel. Carey never spoke after the shot was fired. The body of Carey has been landed at Port Elizabeth. The wounds on the corpse showed that O’Donnell had fired twice, one shot taking effect on the neck, and the other lodging in the back. After the occurrence, Carey lived twenty minutes.
