. The death is announced to-day of Doctor Robert Moffatt, the well-known missionary, aged eighty-eight.
Monetary and Commercial. London, August 9.
The total reserve in the Bank of England to-day in notes and bullion was Li 2,200,000, being Lioo,ooo less than the reserve last Thursday. The proportion of reserve to liabilities has advanced to $ per cent. London, Aug. 10.
Consols remain at and New Zealand securities are as follows:—Five percent. 10-40 Loan, 106; Five per cent 1889 Loan, Four and a half per cent 1879-1904 Loan 102; Four per cent inscribed stock. 102. Adelaide wheat, ex store, is quoted today at 48s; New Zealand ditto, 44s to 48s. Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, 345.’ The total quantity ot wheat afloat for Britain is 1,590,000 quarters, being an increase of 70,000 quarters during the week. Off the coast, cargoes of New Zealand wheat are 435. Australian tallow—best beef, 39s 6d; best mutton, 40s 6d. The French in Madagascar. Paris, August 10. A force of 600 troops has been d spatched to Madagascar to reinforce the French garrison at Tamatave. Anti-Jewish Riots. Vienna, August 10. Serious anti-Jewish riots continue at Pesth, and similar disturbances have taken place m this city. In both places the rioters defied the civil authorities, and were dispersed by military force. A Bill to prevent corrupt practices at elections, introduced by Government, has passed through all its stages in the House of Commons. ;
