[rKTJTBK’s XKLBORAM9 —COPTKI&HT.] The French in Madagascar. Paris, August 5. News of a disqueting nature has been received here from the French commandant at Tamatave. TheHbvas, emboldened at the late inactivity of the French troops, are assuming a defiant attitude, and a body of well armed natives are hovering in the neighborhood of Tamatave. The troops occupying the town are too weak in numerical strength to make an advance from their base of operations, and owing ,tp the. threats of the Hovas and the fear that an attack may be made by them in force, special preparation has been taken to protect Tamatave and strengthen the position of the French troops now occupying the town. The Cholera. Cairo, August 5. Success continues to attend the efforts which have been made to stamp out the cholera epidemic. The- decrease in the ravages of the disease has now become general throughout the country, and no further outbreak is anticipated. A Rising in Spain. Madrid, Aug. 5. A Republican rising occurred to-day among the troops at Badajoz. The rioters held the town for some time, but the emtute was eventually repressed by a body of troops despatched from this city. The New Governor of Canada. Ottawa, Aug. 5. The Marquis of Lansdowne, who succeeds the Marquis of Lome as Go-vernor-General of Canada, arrived here to-day, and was accorded an enthusiastic reception. [Received August 7, 12.45 p.m.J The Troops in Egypt. ; 1 ! London, August 6. ‘ In the House of Commons to-day, Mr Gladstone, in reply to a question, said that the views of the Government in connection with Fgypt ; had not changed. The outbreak of cholera had delayed the steps proposed for the reorganisation of the country, and prevented any hope being entertained of the possibility of an early withdrawal of the British troops now in occupation.
