ASHBURTON POULTRY, PIGEON AND CANARY SOCIETY.

Patron—E. G. Wright, Esq. ; President— John Carter, Esq. ; Vice-President —Joseph Ivess, Esq, ; Hon Treasurer—Mr W. J. Silcock; Hon Secretary—Mr S. E. Poyntz; Committee of Management Messrs S. Saunders, R. Patterson, J. Permain, G. St, Hill, W. H. Zouch, S. W. Alcorn, E. Cookson, G. S. Smith, T. Williams, G. Parkin. Judges—Poultry: Messrs A. Saunders, J. Wood, W. Smith ; Pigeons : Messrs D. Show, S. Saunders; Canary: Messrs T. Stapleton, H. Wadsworth, G. Jameson. The third annual exhibition in connection with the above Society was opened this afternoon in the Town Hall. The weather was on the whole fine, although

rather cold, and theattendance of thegeneral public was quite up to the average of former years. Comparing the entries with those of the last two years, it will be seen that a very satisfactory increase in exhibits has resulted. The following are the entries, which show an increase of 63 for this year, and 200 in excess of the previous one : Poultry Pigeons Canaries Total; 1881— 28 41 138 1882— 53 70 2 75 1883— 78 11 6 338 We are glad to see that the interest in these shows is on the increase, and that the residents here are beginning to appreciate the value of annual exhib tions of well bred poultry. Anyone who visits the Town Hall will at once see the great improfoments in the variety and the quality of the various breeds exhibited from those of the show of 'BBI. Like other institutions of a kindred nature, when well managed they seem to progress, in as marked a degree as the town and district of Ashburton do themselves, and so far as this particular Society is concerned, it bids fair* to become a large affair in a few years. To many, poultry keeping is a source of considerable pleasure, but at the same time there can be no doubt that it is easier to calculatr their cost of keep than the pleasure or amusement which they are said to afford to the “ henwife ”or poultry fancier. We are not at all prepared to say that the average poultry keeper makes it pay, but to those who carry out systematically the rearing of poultry, we have heard it declared over and over again that it does pay, and pay handsomely. To keep pure strains of well-known breeds is, of course, the secret amongst the 200 or more “golden rules ” which every breeder must know before attempting to make the occupation remunerative. To those who intend trying their, hands in this particular, they cannot do better than invest their shilling and see for themselves the really capital show of poultry, etc., at the Town Hall. It was intended this season to hold a dog show in connection with this Society, but from the apathy shown by owners of dogs, the matter fell through. Should,' however, it be decided upon next year, a very much larger hall will have to be provided. The Committee deserve great praise for the commendable way in which the exhibits are arranged, a very noticeable improvement being the staging in the canary claaaes KB compared with last year. As we are unable to publish the detailed description of exhibits in this issue, we purpose giving it {to our readers to-morrow. The following is the prize list : POULTRY. Class I.
