which caught h«r by the body and held her so tenaciously that three men with a tomahawk could not make the brute relinquish its hold. The dog wa= ultimately despatched with two bullets. The girl is not expected to recover. A Land Transation. New Plymouth, To-day. The Bank of New Zealand has purchased from Mr Carrington tne land on which the Masonic Hotel stand , in the centre of the town, for L6,o' !! . The Bank intend to immediately build on the site a handsome building. Dunedin Goal Enquiry. Dunkkin, To-day. The Gaol Commissioners resumed their sittings to-day. Prisoners Chalmers Reid, and Hawkins were examined. The former said that when he went to work at the quarries it was rumored amongst the prisoners that the men must fill twelve trucks daily to obtain the full number of marks, but never found such was the casr. The men simply had to do as much as they could. Had not received rough treatment, nor had ho seen other prisoners so treated. Prisoners now giowl from morning to night, just the same as they did in Caldw dl’s time, and are always calling the officers inhuman brutes, and that sort of thing. Never excited)’ - threatened to kill Caldwell. Torrance interviewed him while annoyed about Some treatment, and he said “By George, if the old fellow does not leave off I have a good mind to kill him.” Hawkins said he had been three years under Warder Duncan, but never saw the prisoners illtreated, nor warders drunk. Warder Beasley denied that he was »;ever drunk. Several other prisoners denied anything improper having taken place in the gaol. Captain Hume is to be examined on Monday. Going Home. The' Herald states that owing to the continued illness of Dr Macdonald, Rector of the High School, he contemplates a return to the old country.
