WRECK OF A SCHOONER.
All Hands Saved.
[by telegraph. ] Napier, To-day,
The schooner Transit, of 70 tons, Garroway master, bound for Lyttelton, with a cargo of guano, put in here last Friday with a broken main boom and mainsail, and anchored in the roadstead. A northeast gale sprung up on Monday increasing yesterday with a very high sea. Last night the gale moderated, but the sea is still rough. The Transit was riding to two anchors. About 2 a.m. both cables parted, and the vessel went ashore on Petone beach. As the vessel neared the breakers tho crew, consisting of six hands, took to the rigging and all got ashore. One man was thrown on to the deck when the vessel struck, and was rather badly hurt, but he was landed safely. The seals now going down, but the vessel is a total wreck.
The Marine Department has received a telegram, stating that the schooner Transit wrecked at Napier was uninsured, the cargo, however, was insured. The Transit, wrecked at Napier to-day, is owned by Messrs Jaggar, Hopper and Eastown, of Auckland. The Laurences were only effected yesterday afternoon— On the hull, LSOO in the South British, and the cargo between L4OO and LSOO in the Union.
