Accident to the Hawea. New Plymouth, To-day. The second mate of the s.s. Hawea somehow or other mistook the Waitara light-for New Plymouth, and grounded the vessel at the mouth of that river at two o'clock this morning, bn the ebb tide. The tide having made sufficiently, she floated off without sustaining any damage, . and anchored in the roadstead at nine a.m. Supreme Oonrt> The Supreme Court case of Daniels, for - arson, was not concluded last night, and the jury were locked up all night. The 1 Judge; After opening the Court this morn- - ing, summed up at some length, and the S: retired; and Danniels was found y, and. sentenced to five years’ imprisonment. A Captain Drowned: : . Wellington, To-day. The Huia arrived from Wanganui at ‘ one this afternoon. Her chief officer, Captain Alexander Murphy, was lost overboard during the passage. It appears that he was in charge of the deck after leaving Wanganui, and when about 20 miles, from that port he was seen to fall overboard, and it is supposed that the suction drew him underneath the vessel, . and he was struck by the propeller, as he was not seen afterwards. It is a mystery what caused him to fall overboard, but it is surmised that while standing besides the rail he fell asleep, and went over the side.. Morphy leaves a wife and four children resident in Wellington. An enquiry is to be held. The flags in the town write lowered half-most oat of respect to his memory. University Revenue, Dunedin, To-day. The Otago University’s revenue for} the year is L 9,222, of which JL6,620 was derived from endowments. Legal Technicalities. Judge Williams to-day ruled there was no reason under the legislation of last session why a married woman, after obtaining a protection order, could not commence an action to obtain the probate of a will* in which she is named executrix. The Public Trustee had pleaded that she could not.
