At a meeting of the Victorian Racing Club to-day, it was decided to add z,ooo sovs to the Melbourne Cup, making 1,500 sovs added money, and that the winner of the Victorian Derby must carry ylb penalty for the Melbourne Cup. It was also resolved to withdraw the Champion Stakes from the programme of the New Year’s Day meeting, and to substitute in its place' two races to be called the Bagot Stakes and the Standish Plate, the winner of the latter to receive 500 sovs. The race for the Champion Stakes is hereafter to be run at the autumn meeting, in March, the added money being as at present—l,ooo sovs ior the first horse, and 200 sovs for the second. [Received May 3, 1 p.m.] The Sunday Question. Melbourne, To-day. There is much discussion regarding the Sunday question. A monster meeting is to be held at the Town Hall to-night in favor of the opening of the Library on Sundays as well as the Picture Gallery and Museum. An opposition meeting is to be held on Monday. Mr Francis’s Health. The state of Mr James Francis’s health is now reported to be very precarious. N.S.W Parliament. Sydney, Yesterday. Parliament was prorogued by his Excellency the Governor to-day. In the‘course of his speech Lord Loftus stated that the revenue of the colony was very satisfactory, and fully realised the Treasurer’s estimates.
