On Saturday night Messrs Cunningion and Kent, mechanical engineers, successfully exhibited the electric light at Christchurch, all the details of the machinery of which have been manufactured by them. According to the Tima.ru Herald, Temuka has seldom been so full of. visitors as it was yesterday, probably never on. a Sunday, except the occasion of Father Henneberty’s temperance demonstration. The occasion was the dedication of St. Joseph’s'Catholic Church, an account of the principal features of which we published recently. The congregation responded liberally to an appeal for subscriptions, the amount collected at the. morning service being sufficient to pay off one-fourth of the total debt.on the church and presbytery. Had the weather in the early morning been more promising, the attendance, and consequently, the collection, would no doubt have been still larger.
It appears that there was soma delay in the receipt of the drawings from the Christchurch School of Arts at Auckland, but they are now on view at the Art Exhibition. The facts are these. The officials at Auckland were not aware of any package of drawings on board the Arawala till midday on Thursday, when a letter whs received by the secretary, Mr R. M. Tripp, notifying the facts. At that hour, however, the awards had not only been already made but' vhe printed' list was actually in type in the faming Slav. Steps however, were immediately taken to get the package from the ship, but it was the very last one taken out, and its contents were not opened and inspected till Friday, at 4 p.m. It will thus be seen that no time has been loso. The universal opinion is that the drawings are of a very high order and merit. The same explanation applies to the apparent delay as to cer vain exhibits from Wellington, the work of the pupils of E. Fraser Jones. It - may be mentioned that the Arawata was detained down the coast, and did not reach Auckland wharf till 6 p.m. on Wednesday evening. ■ Holloway’s Pills are strongly recommended to all persons who are much reduced in power and condition, whose stomachs are weak, and whose nerves arc shattered. The beneficial effects of these Pills will be; perceptible after, a few days’ trial, though a more extended course may be required to reestablish perfect health. Holloway’s medicine acts on the organs of digestion, and induces complete' regularity in the stomach, liver, pancreas, and kidneys. This treatment is both safe and certain in result, and is thoroughly consistent with observation, experience, and common sense. The purification of the blood, the removal of all: noxious matter from the secretions, and the excitement of gentle action in the bowels, are the sources of the curative powers of Holloway’s Pills.—Advt, -
