AN UNEQUAL MATCH.

Within the last few days (says the Manchester Guardian of November 25) several mysterious paragraphs have appeared in different newspapers stating that the sister of a well-known Marquis had lately married a man not only much younger than herself, but also greatly below her in the social scale. The facts of the case are simply these “ The Rev. Lord Archibald Douglas, a brother of the Marquis of Queensbury and of Lady Florence Dixie, joined the Church of Rome some years ago, and and after the usual course of study and probation, was ordained a priest by Cardinal Manning. Since then he has devoted his life and money towards the reclamation of boys, ‘ waifs and strays ’ from the streets, to whom he gives a home, teaches them useful trades, and then starts them in life. At the institution which he has founded and maintains, and where he always resides,

situated in Woodfield Terrafce, Harrow Road. Paddington, there are some 70 or 80 of these lads, all of whom are being trained to be industriaus working men. But the housekeeping, the eating and. drinking of so many individuals is naturally a source of anxiety to Lord Archibald, and although, greatly assisted ' by the subscriptions of his co-reli-gionists and others, he finds that the good old rule of ‘ waste not want not' is not observed by those who have charge of providing for the wants of so large an establishment. In order to put matters upon a more satisfactory footing he invited his sister. Lady Gertrude Douglas, who is also a convert to the Catholic Church, to live with . him, and since then some matters have been on a much more satisfactory footing. Some threemonths ago Lord Archibald went to Canada, taking with him forty boys of the home for the purpose of establishing them as farmers in the far West. During his absence he received a letter from his sister stating that she - was about to marry a young man ‘‘whof* had been brought up by her brothel and who was now acting as head baker of the establishment. His Lordship was greatly taken aback by the news and telegraphed and wrote from Canada urging his sister at any rate to delay her intended marriage until • his - return. But it was of no avail. The happy couple were married off hand in th'e Roman Catholic Church at Hammersmith, and have gone to re-,-side in that neighborhood. Lady Ger-.. . trude has some little means of her own. It is needless to say that the Roman Catholic community in London has been not a little agitated by v this marriage. The lady is related to some 0f... the most aristocratic families in the» kingdom, her own dating back several hundred years. Her husband is barely 21 years of age.”
