Excessively hot weather has been experienced here in the shade. At the observatory 104 deg in the shade and IGodeg in the sun have been registered. A welcome change, however, came on Tuesday afternoon.
Sir B. O’Loghlen is opposed to indiscriminate immigration, but favors the family system, the Government paying a third or some portion of the passage money. The performances of the MontagueTnrner Opera Company came to an abrupt close on Wednesday night owing to financial difficulties.
A person who stated he was Capt. Ward, of the Bengal Native Infantry, and son of the late Master of she Mint, Melbourne, has been arrested for passing valueless cheqnes. He had been living very expensively. Sydney, Jan. 18. Parliament was opened yesterday by the Governor, in the presence of a large gathering. The Address in Reply to the Speech was moved by Mr Stephens and seconded by Mr O’Meara. Mr Garret moved an amendment expressing dissatisfaction at the course taken by the Government in regard to the Land Bill. This action on the part of Mr Garret is generally condemned, and is attributed to the fact that he has not been included in the Government. On a division being called for, Mr Garret was absent, and Mr Buchanan alone represented the Opposition. The Address in Reply was then carried without a division after a brief and lively debate.
Mr Mcllhone having resigned the seat for East Sydney which he held with that of the Hunter district, the election takes place next week. Messrs Copeland (Minister of Works), A. Renwick, and A. H. Jacob arc likely to be nominated.
A married woman named Ann Richards died yesterday from injuries received on the tram line. She was endeavoring to get into the tram which had started, and falling was dragged under the motor. A man, name unknown, has deliberately committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a train in Elizabeth street.
Very heavy rain has fallen, and the weather generally has been cool. The Hon. Geoffrey Eager, Under Secretary for Finance and Trade, is very ill, and has received leave of absence. The New South Wales Frozen Meat Company, whose works are at Orange, have commenced sending consignments to the Sydney market of suitable stores, and special means of transport are provided. The inquiry into the collision between the steamers Ketnbia and Rosedale resulted in the masters of both vessels being censured, as well as the mate of the Rosedale for not taking proper precautions.
The Municipal Council have resolved to proceed forthwith with the erection of additional buildings adjoining the Town Hall.

The New Zealand Insurance Company’s buildings have been burglariously entered, but nothing valuable has been abstracted.
Mr Drury, general manager of the Queensland National Bank, proceeds to England shortly in connection with the floating of loans already authorised.' The Queensland National Bank pay a dividend at the rate of 12 per cent.
