THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTION.

To the Editor.

Sir, —It seems very doubtful indeed iwhether one of the persona elected at the meeting of householders, held on Monday evening, to be a School Committeeman, and whose claims to that office it would be remarkably difficult for anybody but a cumulative voter to discover, is legally qualified to hold the office,. Lhe

Act says that a Committeeman must be a householder, and defines the term “ householder ” to mean every adult, male or female, who as owner or tenant, leasee or occupier, occupies, uses, or resides' in any dwelling-house, shop, warehouse, or other building in any district, or qvery parent er guardian who is liable to rfaaihtain or has the actual custody of any child. This is plain English enough, and clearly intimates that bare ownership of a building is not sufficient qualification for a Committeeman ; actu d occupation or use of a building is required. Nowj I assume that the person in question is not the actual ocoupans or user of a building within the Ashburton Educational district in any shape or form ; nbr a parent or guardian or the actual custodian of any child. If this be so, his electiqn, I take it, is null and void. This is 1 a matter which the Committee should take in hand without delay, and if the Committee will not move, it should be brought under the notice of the Board of Education by the persons interested.—l’am, etc., A. B.
