Petroleum. —At a meeting of the directors of the Southern Cross Petroleum Company, held in Christchurch last evening, Mr F. W. Williams, a shareholder who had just returned from Gisborne, stated that the prospects of the Company were very good indeed and it was impossible to go anywhere without seeing oil oozing out and the surface of the ground was covered in paraffin. A roan from Pennsylvania, who was employed by the Pacific Company, stated that the prospects are better than in some of the American oil regions.

Craig, Dr Rouse, and the Chairman, to co-operate with Mr Motely, acting for the Napier shareholders, and that this meeting pledges itself to hand over all proxies for the purpose of carrying out such arrangements as the Napier and Christchurch Committees 1 may deem necessary. ’’ An amendment was proposed by Mr Hooper, and seconded by Mr G. Hyde, .as follows : —“ That all the words,after ‘ shareholders ’ be expunged, and that it read, ‘ and report to an adl jpuurned meeting to bo held this day week as to the best course in their opinion to be adopted by the shareholders.’” A 1 show of hands resulted in the amendment 1 being carried by 11 to 2.
