' n , - . [by telegraph.] '• Christchurch, To-day. Numerous rumors are afloat regarding the Selwyn seat in the House of Representatives. The first is that the Hon. Sir John Hall has been requested to obtain leave of absence instead of vacating the seat, but he has declined that course. Further measures are being adopted to induce him to change him mind. Should he not do so, prominent Government men will support Mr E. J. Lee, on whose bbhalf canvassing is. now going on. It is said that Mr E. Wakefield, of Timaru, was asked to come forward as a Government candidate, but declined, and that the Hon. E. Richardson has been asked to offer himself as an Opposition candidate, and will probably consent.
