ENGLAND v. AUSTRALIA. [reutek’s telegrams—copyright.] Melbourne, Dec? 30. The cricket match between the Hoh. Ivo Bligh’s Eleven-and ’the 'Australian Eleven was commenced here to-day. There was a very large attendance of spectators, by whom great interest was taken in the‘game. The weather was very fine, and the g; ound being in good order, a capital wicket was pitched. The Australians won tin toss, and went in first, .Massie and Bannerman being the first to face the English bowling. The former failed to make any stand, and was caught and bowled when he had scored 4,buton Murdoch joining Bannerman runs camo fast, both players hitting freely. Bannerman was stumped when he had contributed a well-played 30. Horan followed, but was caught without scoring, arid Mrirdoch’ was bowled with 48 to hisr credit. McDonnell and Giffenthen made 1 a good stand for 43 and 36 respectively. Blackham obtained a well-earned 25, but Bonnor particularly distinguished himself, having, when stumps were drawn, contributed GO, not out. ,His innings, which included four 6’s, was a very brilliant one, his hitting facing splendid. At the close of tKb day’s play the Australians had scored 251 for seven wickets. The, fielding of the English players was excellent, though several difficult chances were missed. The English tenn being 114 behind their opponents, had to follow on, and at the close of the day had scored ll without the loss of a wicket. In the first innings of the 'English eleven yesterday, Vernon scored 11, not not out, and the extras were 12, not 5, as previously stated. The score attributed to Richman (substitute) is ■ incorrect, and should be omitted. The wicket was heavy, owing to the rain which fell during tie-day,-Twenty thousand persons were present at the cricket match yesterday. The wicket was very unfavorable to the Englishmen. It is still raining, and the match may not be continued to-day.
