* —,— [per press association.] A Waikato Sir Roger. Auckland, To-day. Lovegrove, a Waikato pointer and glazier, who is going to England to claim the Earl of Derwentwater’s estate, arrived here yesterday. He has been 26 years away from Home, and states that he ran away from home and entered the navy at 16, and took part in the Crimean war. He was a pie vendor somewhere in Yorkshire, and his relatives always believed him . dead. The estates have been in chancery for over 100 years. Drowned. Wellington, To-day. A settler named C. Claxton, residing near Featherston, was yesterday afternoon drowned in the Tauherinakau River. The body has not yet been recovered. An Inquest to be Held- ■... An inquest is to be held on the recent fire at Newton.
The Trisco Mail. The WanaVa with the ’Frisco mail arrived here at 9.30 this morning after a rough passage from New Plymouth. The mail was transhipped into the Hawea, which sailed for Lyttelton at noon. ' Coach Accident and Loss of Mails. Opona&b, To-day. A heavy rain caused a fresh in the ■ river yesterday. While the Parihaka ■ coach-was-crossing the Wainui river, torrents of water came down, suddenly sweeping the coach, horses, and driver (Charljes Telley) away. The driver went along with the current until he managed to. get on one hank and thus escaped. Fortunately the passengers had left the coach to go over the river another way. The horses were found dead on the beach
a couple of miles from the sccuo . the accident, and the front part of t:>o roach has been seen. The English n:a 1. were on board, and a search party has been < ut and it is possible the mails will he recovered to-day, although it is more than likely that they have been washed out to sea. The amount of the damage is estimated at Ll5O. Dismissed. Dunedin, To-day. The information against Walters, for unlaw fully wagering and gaming, was dismissed on the ground that the room in which the totalisator was worked was not a publ e place.
