A Sewing Machine Agent in Co cut. — The St. Bathan’s correspondent of the Dunstan Times reports a singular case heard before Major Keddell, K. M. The local constable laid an information against Mr Xiockhead,- agent for the Wertheim Sewing. Machine Company, for hawking in "Vincent County without a license. Mr Bowlatt, who defended, contended that a* his client was a servant of the firm whose machines he was selling, and as the articles he was selling came direct from his .employer's manufactory into his hands, there was no case to answer ; as anyone either by himself, a servant, or an agent, could sell and dispose of his own manufactures anywhere and everywhere without let or hindrance. Mr Lockhead, on going into the witness box, said he was the paid servant of Wertheira ; he had informed the police that no license wns required ; and, though sewing machines had been sold in the same manner for fully twelve years in the various colonies, no proceeding similar to this had ever been taken against the vendors. Major Keddell said that he could not see why the police did not make some inquiry before summoning anyone fiom Dunedin, putting them to so much expense. However, it seemed to him to be a clear enough case that no breach of the by-laws had token place. That Wertheim was the manufacturer of these machines he had no doubt, and that he carried on the business of selling them ; and also that it is quite clear that Mr Lochhead was the servant of Mr.Wertheim, and therefore did not require a license to sell his wares. The information would therefore be dismissed. Holloway’s Ointment and Pilis. — Glad Tidings.
