WRECK OP A BARQUE.

[by telegraph.J New Plymouth, To-day. The barque Australind went ashore half a mile north of the breakwater this morning. The vessel is from Wellington with a cargo of cement. She is in command of Captain Hill, and is owned by Captain Williams, the wellknown coal merchant of Wellington. She is believed to have become a total wreck. The insurance amounts to about The officers are not yet known. Later. A heavy northeasterly gale set in last night, which gradually strengthened. The barque Australind, which had brought cement for the harbor works, parted her cable, and ran ashore near the spot where Rees’ jetty runs out Were she not an old vessel there would be a chance of saving her, as she is on a soft bottom, and the wind is going round to the west, but as it is she has been much strained, and is lying in a hopeless condition. The captain and crew were all saved. The Australind was an American built wooden vessel of 520 tons register, about 18 years old, and owned by Captain Williamis, of Wellington. She brought 2,000 barrels of cement here, of which 1,500 had been landed. On the vessel coming ashore Captain Hall

lowered his own boats, in which he and the crew reached the land. The lifeboat had been manned, but there was no necessity for sending it out.
