[per reuter’s agency.] The Manapouri. Melbourne, July 9 Arrived —Manapouri, from the Bluff, last evening. Through the Canal. Melbourne, Yesterday. The Peninsula and Oriental Companies’ agent received a telegram this morning stating that European mails will be now conveyed through the Suez Canal by the company’s steamers, instead of by rail from Suez to Alexandria as in the past. Arrest. The police to-day effected the arrest of a man, who is alleged to have broken into premises occupied by Joseph Avinski, in Lonsdale street East, last month, and to have stolen jewellery valued at Li,500. Breadstuffs. The breadstuffs market is firmer. Sudden Death. John Matheson, late general manager of the Bank of Victoria, was seized with an epileptic fit to-day and died suddenly. Highly Important. Melbourne, To-day. It has been ascertained that John Matheson died of apoplexy, and not of epilepsy as at first stated. A Publican-Burglar. The men arrested on the charge of burglary at the shop of /vvinaki, in Lonsdale street, include a licensed victualler. Hops. Private advices report that the English hop crop is expected to be fifty per cent, below the average. One Result of the Row. Advices received from London state the Insurance Companies require an additional quarter per cent, only on vessels passing through the Suez Canal. A Loan, Perth, Yesterday. Under the authority of the Secretary of State for the Colonies the Government of Australia will shortly place on the London market a loan of L 260,000 for certain public works in this colony.
