The proposed Tradesmen’s Ball to the petty officers of H. M. s.s. Nelson, has fallen through, the Choral Hall not being available before the departure of the ship. The Charge Against a Policeman. Superintendent Thompson has returned from the Thames, and will forward to Wellington the report of the enquiry into the charge brought by Farrell against O’Grady, the officer in charge of the Thames district. It is understood that he does not intend taking action on his own responsibility re the serious charge made against O’Grady. Auckland Criminal Sessions. Judge Gillies in charging the Grand Jury, said there were 22 charges against 11 prisoners. He was sorry the duties of the jury would be somewhat arduous, though from the number of the charges and the gravity of the offences it was not to be inferred there had been an increase of crime in the district. Two of the most seaious offences having been committed years ago. The evidence in Winiata’s case would be simple, but in the case of Pukurua and Epita the proof of guilt would hang on the identification of the prisoners with those who fired at McWilliams Referring to the charge against Fairbura of being illegally on the Rev. Gitto’a premises, he said he did not know on what charge the Grown Prosecutor intended to act, but pointed out that unless it could be proved that the prisoner was there with felonious intent the case must fall through. In the cases of rape on children under twelve years’ of age his Honor pointed out that the consent of the persons raped was not an element of the defence. Found Drowned. New Plymouth, To-day The dead body of a man was found yesterday on the beach near the mouth of the Henui river. It was much disfigured. He has been recognised as John King. His parents are said to resiJo in Auckland, and ho was well-known at the Thames. An inquest will be hold to-day. Later.

An inquest was held on the body of John King this morning, who was found drowned yesterday near the mouth of the Henui river. From the evidence adduced it appears that deceased’s father had served in tha 53rd Regiment in Waikato, and was a pensioner. Deceased had been in the Armed Constabulary force, and at one time was an apprentice to Mr Lewison, jeweller, Auckland. He had been acting as billiard-marker, but had been drinking heavily lately. A verdict of “ Found drowned ” was returned. CriminalChristchurch, To-day.

The criminal sessions of the Supreme Court commenced this morning. His Honor Judge Johnstone, after remarking that the calendar contained nothing of exceptional interest, commented briefly on each case to be heard. Thera are in all twenty-one cases for trial. Athletics, Dunedin, To-day. O’Connor and Burke are matched to run on the Caledonian ground on September 2nd. The Defaulting Bank Clerk. Cuthbert McKellar, the defaulting Bank clerk, was arrested at the Bluff. Mr Driver. Mr Driver intimates to the Press that, having severed his connection with the Agricultural Company, he is now free to attend to his Parliamentary duties, and loaves for Wellington on Wednesday. Ho denies any intention of resigning his seat in Vogel’s favor.
