[l-KU HEUTEU’S AOKNUY. ] Compensation. Sydney, To-day. The action brought by the Hon. John Lucas, M.L.C., claiming L 76,945 from Government for the resumption of his property, comprising one acre and one rood, at Darling Harbor, has resulted in the jury awarding plaintiff L 4,500. Government’s offer to Mr Lucas was Ls.dyd. Plaintiff has to pay all costs in the suit. Colonial Defences. Adelaide, To-day. In the Legislative Assembly last night a debate took place on the proposed defences of the colony. The House was favorable to their completion, and passed a resolution authorising Government to telegraph to England for a gunboat. Produce. Melbourne, Yesterday. Malting barley remains at 5s 4d. The market is quiet. Wheat is irregular to-day. The quotation for shipping is 6s 3d ; for New Zealand oats the market is steady; feeding sorts are unchanged at 4s to 4s 2d; and milling at 4s 3d to 4s 3d. A Rumor. A rumor is current that the Govern-
merit intend to repeal the existing Stock Tax Act at any early date.
