The Government has applied to the Supreme Court for an injunction to restrain the promoters of the Channel tunnel scheme from proceeding further with the work of construction. Homeward Mails. The homeward Australian and New Zealand mails via San Francisco, which left Auckland on May 23rd, were delivered here on the 30th June. Wheat Afloat. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,030,000 qrs. Arrived. The preparations which have been proceeding at the War Office and Admiralty for the despatch of troops and vessels to Egypt are now completed. Work at the Arsenal and Dock Yards has been pushed forward with all possible speed, and an extensive force, in eluding a siege train of 72 guns is now ready to depart for Egypt without delay if required.
Arabi’s Suggestion. Alexandria, July 3. It has transpired that Arabi Pasha, as Minister of War, has made a proposal to the Council of Ministers that a levy en masse should forthwith be made for the purpose of increasing the defensive force of Egypt. The work of fortifying this city is now being actively proceeded with by the Egyptian authorities.
