Melbourne, June 28. It now appears that there is some pro spect of business being transacted in the Assembly. Last night the subject of defences was brought forward, and Mr Woods wanted the question to be submitted as one of urgency. The sum of LIOO,OOO was voted towards defence works. Altogether about a million was voted on account of estimates, including LIOO.OOO for water conservation. The project of a Working Men’s College has been taken up with spirit. An enthusiastic meeting was held on Monday night, at which Judge Higgenbotham, the Bishop of Melbourne, and others spoke. Seventeen hundred pounds has been subscribed, in addition to Mr Ormond’s gift of

L 5.000. Mr Ooulton, whose promises at Prahran were partially destroyed by dynamite, has issued a writ against the South British Insurance Company of New Zealand, to recover the policy which the company declined to pay, as Mr Coulton only insured against tire. Mr Flint, stationmaster at Alice Springs says he believes that he has found traces of Leichardt a hundred miles east of the telegraph lino. He met a friendly tribe of natives, who corroborated the information that a white man died in the vicinity many years ago, about the time of Leichardl’s expedition.
