SUSPECTED MURDER OF A WOMAN AT OAMARU.
♦ [by telegraph. J Oamaru, To-day. A sensational affair has occurred here. The body of a Mrs Alex. Beattie has been found in a creek partly dressed, and under circumstances that are suggestive of murder having been committed. When taken out of the water the deceased was discovered to have a handkerchief tightly bound about her neck; besides which she had a wound in her throat, and a bruise on the face. The dress bore stains of blood upon it. From what can be gathered it appears that Beattie and his wife have not been living very happily together for some lime past. A week or two ago Beattie returned home and found his wife in the house of a neighbor. He was excessively angry, and threatened to burn the house down. In consequence of his violent conduct he was bound over to keep the peace. He went straight home, but found his wife had gone away. The woman was not again heard of until her remains were found. The body has been removed into town, where it awaits an inquest.
