AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
Sydney, June 22.
The carpenters and joiners of Sydney are endeavoring to raise a strike for increased wages. The movement is only partially successful. The masters express their willingness to grant an increase, but only to men whom they consider competent, Mr Allison, lessee of the Theatre Royal, Adelaide, has taken an extensive property at the corner of Pitt and Market streets, where he will build a large theatre.
The Newcastle miners, respecting _Mr Gregaon’s proposed basis for arbitration, sent 0 him a lengthy document in reply. The men slate that before they give any definite answer the whole district must bo consulted.
In the Melbourne Assembly on the 20th, in committee, Sirß. O’Loghlen stated tnat Government intended to re-impose the tobacco duty permanently, and to allow the beer duty to lapse altogether, and to reduce postal rate from Ist July, 1883. They would abandon the proposal for the abolition of the tea duty. The steamer Tamar, which left Hobart on the 14th, had not arrived on the 2ist. Some uneasiness is felt. The Magana proceeds in search of her to-day. Brisbane, 22. The Ranelagh left the dock and proceeded to Sydney to day. A now gold reef was struck near Maryboi ough and Port Douglas. Spillane and wife, charged with the murder of Irvine at Toowoomba, were reexamined on the 21st, and again remanded for eight days.
