[l'l'.K I’KESS ASSOCIATION.] Early Closing Encouraged. Auckland, To-day. At a public meeting yesterday night resolutions were passed encouraging the Early Closing Association in their work. Taranaki Railway. The Ngatimanipototos deny the right of Tawhiao or Te Wheoro to negotiate with Government re the Taranaki railway. They say the whole matter rests with Rewi. Discharged. Christchurch, To-day. William Anderson, charged with breaking into the shop of Henry Wilkinson and stealing certain boots, was discharged, as there was no evidence to connect him with the property. Paper Mills. Dunedin, To-day. Feigusson ar d Mitchell have purchased the Ocago Paper Mills for L 1,225. Direct Steam Communication. William Mason, ex-Mayor, has received advices that the first of a line of direct steamers from London arrives at Dunedin in September, and arrangements will be made to send home 80,800 carcases of sheep on the return trip. Four-roomed Cottage Burned. A four-roomed house at Opoha was burned down last night. It was insured in the New Zealand office for Ll5O.
