Consols have declined one-eighth, and are quoted at New Zealand securities are unchanged at the following quotations ;—Five per Cent. 10.40 Loan 1889 Loan 106; Four and a Half per Cent., 1879-1904 Loan, 103. Adelaide and New Zealand wheat, ex store, is quoted at 51s and 50s respectively, but to effect sales lower prices must be accepted. The market for Australian tallow is firm; best beef, 43s 6d; best mutton, 455. A firm and active demand was experienced at today’s wool sale. The catalogue comprised 9,200 bales. The Mails. The homeward mails via Naples, which left Melbourne on May 15th per Orient steamship Cotopaxi, were delivered here to-day. The mails via Suez and Brindisi, dated Melbourne, May 9th, were also delivered to-day. HopsThe recent accounts to hand from the Kentish hop ground are of more favorable nature, and it is believed that the crop will be better than was anticipated. Frozen Mutton. A portion of the steamship Cuzco’s cargo of frozen mutton was placed in the market to-day. The meat was in fair condition, and averaged 6j£d per lb. Precautionary. The Australian Cricketers. The Australians commenced their cricket match at Sheffield to-day against an Eleven of Yorkshire. An enormous crowd of spectators was present. The weather was showery during the day, and the wicket was consequently somewhat heavy. The home team went first to the wickets, hut, with the exception of M. J. Phillips, who scored 38, they were unable to make a stand against the splendid bowling of the Australians, and were all disposed of for a total of 92. Garrett and Giffen both did great execution, the former taking four wickets for 27 runs, and the latter five wickets for 16.
