Samuel Charles Chappel Bonnet, auctioneer, of Christchurch, who absconded from his creditors, was arrested on board the Botomahana on her arrival from the South to-day. A Sharp Summons. Marton, To-day. William Gumming, a man working at M'lndoe’s stable hero, this morning fell down and died instantaneously. The supposed cause of death was heart disease. The deceased formerly was a coach-driver. The Evergreen Johnny. Wellington, To-day. J. L. Hall, with a dramatic company, arrived from Sydney by thes.s Wakatipu this morning. The company will open to-night for a short season of four nights. The Governor’s Movements. The Hon. Mr Rolloston announced in the House that the Governor obtained six months’ leave of absence, in order to visit England on private business, and that he intended to do so.

The Executive of the Grand Lodge of Good Templars forwarded to the city members resolutions affirming the necessity of voting power being extended to all persons on the electoral rolls, and that the police charges, as well as the liquor revenue should be localised. The Religious Maniac. The prisoner Kitto was marched through the streets to-day in manacles, escorted by two gaol officers. Ho has been examined by medical men in the gaol, who pronounce him insane. Their report has been forwarded to the Colonial Secretary, who has ordered Kitto’s removal to the Asylum, pending his trial. Paying in a Pub.

At the City Court, H ugh Calder, a contractor, was fined os for paying his workman in a public-house. It was the first case of the kind, and hence the nominal penalty.
