A gentlemanly young man named Herbert Lockwood, was yesterday arrested on a charge of issuing valueless cheques. He stated he spent LB,OOO in nine mqntfis, principally in betting. Willing to Pay. Alexandra, To-day. Tupate, the father of the lad who was rescued on Saturday last, telegraphs today from Kihikihi, hy direction of Manga, to Tawhiao, that he would pay all expenses of the policeman’s clothes destroyed, and all other costs of getting Tawhiao to explain this to Mr 0, O. A case of some interest was decided at the Appeal Court. It was an appeal from the verdict of the jury in the case of J. G. Hislop v. the National Bank of New Zealand, tried in the District Court of Westland, before Judge Broad, in which the plaintiff recovered LIOO damages for injury done to his credit and reputation through the dishonoring of a cheque. The appeal, which was on the ground of mis-

direction ef the Judge, was allowed, and judgment ordered to be entered for defendant in the Court below with costs. Not in tlie District.

Drink has been sold in large quantities to the natives by Alexandra publicans, and there has been a great deal of drunkenness. The hotelkeepers sold drink, holding that Alexandra was not within the native licensing district. The question is a very narrrow one, and on inspection being made, the opinion was expressed that practically it is outside. A meeting of the Executive Council will bo held to-day to alter the boundary as soon as possible, so as to bring Alexandra within the native licensing district. What the Judge Thinks of it. At the Supreme Court, in discharging the native prisoners charged under the Coast settlement Act, the Judge said:— “ I understand the Attorney-General has ordered the Crown Prosecutor to enter a voile prosequi in the two native cases under the West Coast Settlement Act. I have no right to interfere in the matter in any way, except to express my surprise at such a course being taken ; that the prisoners should be brought up on such a serious charge under a special Act ; that they should be kept in prison six months on that grave charge ; and that the Crown Prosecutor should apply to enter a nolle prosequi seems a very extraordinary proceeding on the. part of the Government, more especially when I see that two of the indictments have been quashed on account of the insufficiency on the face of them.” Addressing Uangi, he said, “ The Government have determined not to bring you to be tried on the charge you have already been in prison six months awaiting for, nor docs the Government offer any evidence. You are, therefore, free to go where you will.” The _ native did not seem to understand the situation, but left the box.

Criminal. At the Supreme Court the cases of Wm. Richards for horse-stealing, and George Lacy for larceny, were heard this morniin'. Lacy received a sentence of two years’ hard labor. The jmy are considering their verdict in Richards’ case. Wm. Gallagher, charged with killing a native, has just been committed. Committed for Trial. Dunkdin, To-day. At the City Court this morning, Eliza Whittel was committed for trial for stealing jewellery. Died under Chloroform. Dunedin, To-day. A son of Captain Russell, marine surveyor, aged nine years, while having his teeth extracted at Armstrong’s, the chemist, died while under chloroform. Dr Burns is stated to have been in attendance. Some old Buildings Swept Away. Invercargill, To-day. Early this morning a lire broke out in premises in Tay street occupied by T. J. Lumsden, watchmaker, and spread to the Bank of Australasia adjoining. Both places wore soon burned to the ground. A considerable quantity of furniture and effects Avere sa% T ed from the Bank. At one time it seemed as if the premises of the Bank of New South Wales (brick), to the left of the burning building, would be destroyed, and A. Watson’s brick shop on the right, separated by a right-of-way, was also in danger. The portion nearest the fire was occupied by Peters, hairdresser, whose stock was considerably damaged by fire and water, and the Bank of NewSouth Wales, from which the furniture removed was also damaged. Nothing is presently known of the origin of the fire. Lumsden says everything was right when ho left the shop at 10.30 last night. The is understood that the erection of new premises shortly. The Brigade was present in forte, and worked well. The insurances are :—Bank of Australia, Lt,ooo on building and L3OO on furniture, in the North British and Mercantile ; Lumsden’s stock and fittings, L2OO in the Northern ; Peters' stock and fittings, L3OO in the Victoria ; Watson’s buildings, L6OO in the Standard ; Bank of Now South Wales, L 2,000 on buildings and fittings, in the Norwich Union. The furniture of Mr Preshaw, the manager, who was uninsured, is greatly damaged.
