ASHBURTON MUFFS V MOUNT SOMERS CRICKET CLUB. [from our own correspondent.] Yesterday morning a team from your Muff Club arrived from Ashburton to try conclusions with a team selected from the Mount Somers Club. The Muffs were driven up by Mr Mcßae, and tell me they had a pleasant journey without the slightest mishap—if I except the sudden collapse of a seat in their vehicle, to the discomfiture of a wellknown Ashburton grain-buyer. The team arrived here at 10.30 a.m., a halt having been made at tho Spread Eagle for breakfast, and the game was at once commenced, the Ashburtonites , taking the field, and succeeding in disposing of their adversaries for a total of 67 runs. Mr Bain, a left-handed player, did good work for his team, in fact, he showed some first-rate cricket. The Muffs put together 51 runs before they were got rid of. The teams then adjourned to Host Hood’s, where an excellent repast was partaken of, and thus refreshed, the knights of the willow again took their places in the field, our team keeping your men leatherhunting until their score had reached the respectable total of a century, making 167 runs for the two innings. The Ashburton men put together 61 for their second attempt, thus losing the match by 55 runs. A return match will, I understand, be arranged shortly, and I hope as enjoyable a day will be spent as was the case yesterday.
