M'Grath, Rangiora, L 16,433 11s. Another Good Horse Scratched. Grip has been scratched for all his en* gagements at the ensuing races. A Child Drowned. Timaru, To-day. A child two-and-half years of age, a son of Davis, draper, of Geraldine, was drowned in the Waihi river yesterday. An Old Resident in Trouble. John Henry Healey, an old resident, was remanded till February 3rd, on two charges of forging promissory notes. Inquest. At the inquest to-day on the man who fell downstairs at Geraldine, on the 14th, and injured his spine so that he died on the 26th, a verdict of “ Accidental death ” was returned. A Dredge as a Peace Maker. Dunedin, To-day. At the dredge demonstration the Hon. Mr Rolleston, the Hon. Mr Oliver and others were present. It was suggested that the new dredge should be called the Union, as it promised to cement the ill-feeling between Dunedin and Port Chalmers on the questions of the harbor improvements and the deepening of the bar. Mr Ramsay, chairman of the Harbor Board, expressed the opinion that within twelve months’ time the largest steamers would be able to cross the bar.
