FATAL ACCIDENT.
This morning, about nine o’clock, a little child, the son of Mrs Woolley, of Wakanui, fell into the creek and was drowned. From what we could learn the unfortunate little fellow, who was between two and three years of age, was playing on the bank of the creek and fell in, and before the body was recovered it had been carried down the stream about 400 or 500 yards, the spot where he was taken out being near Mr Lemon’s property. His parents were away at the time of the fatal occurrence, his mother being on a sick bed in Ashburton. Medical assistance was at once summoned, and every effort made by those present to restore animation, but without success. An inquest on the body will be held tomorrow, at 1.30 p.m., probably in Ashburton, as there would be great difficulty in getting a jury together in the neighborhood of the scene of the accident.
