THE REMOVAL OF MR BEETHAM, R.M.

Mr R. Beetham, who has has been R.M. here three years and a half, and who has now been transferred to Christchurch, sat on the Bench for the last time to-day. There was a full attendance of the local bar, and Mr White, Crown Prosecutor for the district, expressed their regret at Mr Beetham’s removal. Mr White congratulated the retiring R.M. upon being selected to fill a more important post, and spoke highly of his impartiality and courtesy as a Magistrate, and hoped that in his new post he would win the same regard from the bar as he had done in Timaru. Mr Beetham reciprocated the feeling of regret at his removal, and said his relations with the bar had always been of the most cordial character. The local justices also had assisted him most willingly and ably, and the officers of the Court and the Inspector of Police had been able coadjutors in the administration of justice. He felt deeply the kindness which prompted their bidding him farewell in this manner. Mr Beetham is to be entertained at a dinner this evening,
