Shunting the Britisher. Constantinople, Jan. 11. It has transpired that the Sultan has deputed a German officer to undertake the reorganisation of the Turkish GenD’armerie, and this step leads to the belief that it is His Majesty’s intention to shortly dismiss all the Englishmen in the service of the Porte except Baker Pasha, and appoint Germans in their place.

Gambetta Threatens to Resign. Paris, Jan. 11. In the Chamber of Deputies to-day, M. Gambetta introduced the question of the re-establishment of the Scrutin de Liste Bill, which was passed by the Deputies, but thrown out in the Senate in June last. In the course of a vigorous speech on the subject, M. Gambetta announced that a measure similar to the one introduced last year by M. Bardoux would shortly be laid before the Chamber, and declared that unless the Government succeeded in carrying the Bill through both Chambers he would resign his position as head; of the Cabinet.
