Melbourne, Yesterday. The prosecutions initiated by the police against certain parties for raising sweeps on the Melbourne Cup have been dismissed. The Smallpox Spreading. Sydney, Yesterday. A case of smallpox is reported to have occurred at Bega, a small town in the south of this colony, about 250 miles from Sydney. Cricket. The cricket match between the: English team and Eleven N.S. Wales was continued to-day. Thb local team were all disposed of in the first innings for 210, of which Murdoch contributed 58. At the close of the day’s play the Englishmen had put together 145 runs for the loss of six wickets, Midwinter being not out for 45, and Barlow not out for 26. Another Victory for Laycock. Brisbane, Yesterday. At the Brisbane Regatta on Saturday, the sculling race was won easily by Laycock.
