ASHBURTON FIRE BRIGADE.
The regular monthly meeting of the Brigade was held last evening,- at the Borough Chambers ; Captain Dolman in the chair. A quantity of correspondence was read and dealt with. The Treasurer reported the following donations towards the funds of the Brigade since the fire in Wills street :—Mr S. S. Revans (Bank of New Zealand), LlO 10s ; Messrs Poyntz and Co., L 5 5s ; Mr R. Alcorn, L2s 2s ; S. M. Alcorn, L2 2s; New Zealand Insurance Company (per Messrs Jameson and Roberts), L2l; Messrs Albert Roberts and T. Chambers, L 3. The Secretary was instructed to attend- to correspondence and thank those who had contributed as above. The Captain reported that the Secretary had written Messrs Shand, Mason and Co., of London, asking the beat terms upon which a steamer could be procured, and that a reply had been received that upon payment of LIOO cash, and approved bills bearing interest at 5 per cent, for the balance, they would ship an engine to the Brigade immediately, and allow a discount of 10 per cent, on the whole cost. This information had been to hand for some little while, but it was thought better to retain it until something should occur to exercise I'ie public mind a bit, and that now a good opportunity offered, to inform the ratepayers of the matter. Another length oi ladder was ordered for the hook and ladder company. The Committee were authorised to pay full wages and doctor’s'expenses to No. 1 branchman, Geo. Millar, who was hurt at the late fire. Lieut. Dolman and Treasurer Parkin were appointed delegates to attend the annual Conference at Tiraaru on the 9th January. As an idea has got abroad that donations made to the Brigade are divided amongst the members, it is as well that the, public be informed that this is quite erroneous, all such suras being paid to a special account, to assist men injured on duty and similarly deserving objects. Two fresh members were proposed, and the meeting adjourned.
