AUCKLAND JACK SHEPPAED.

The accounts published in the papers about the capture of Fred. Plummerat. Ponsonby recently are very sensational. , After being discharged from the Dunedin gaol he came to Auckland,- and, worked on Taylor and Danaher’s con-; tract for the Kaipara railway. His con-rr ' duct was so good while employed there that he succeeded very well, and had a . sub-contract from the above firm. After he had finished the work he was suddenly missed, but turned up again. . f 5 about six months ago. He rented a three-roomed house in Ponsonby, and ' ' was known as the “ mysterious stranger.”: His house was well furnished, and he ; was always well clad. He soon pos- . sessed the confidence of the heighr bors, to the daughter of one 0f.,,:/whom he was engaged to be' n. married. In fact, it was said that everything was arranged for Saturday, ■' the 26th. Plummer had magnanimously settled Li,500 on the young lady’s father. He also joined one of the church choirs, and, being a good musician, was in great demand for copying music, and otherwise making himself generally useful. Sub-Inspector Pardy, however, has put an end to all this by arresting him for having no lawful visible means -of support. He has been charged at the Police Court, and. I': remanded for eight days. It is thought that many of the burglaries that have taken place lately will be sheeted home - ! to him.
