CRICKET
THE MUFFS AT METHVEN.
A match between the Methven Cricket Club and the Ashburton Cricket Club, took place at Methven yesterday. The Muffs, of whom there was a decent muster rolled up at Shearman’s Hotel shortly after 7 o’clock, and left in a four-in-hand drag, driven by Mr George Scott, for Methven about ha’f an hour later. Some members were talking (the night before) about getting away at half-past five in the morning. But evening resolutions about early rising are one thing and keeping them quite another. However, a sufficiently early start was made, and if there was an hour or two’s delay why—it mattered not. The match resulted in a victory for the Methven men by 31 runs. For Methven, Messrs Garforth and Pannett distinguished themselves with the bat, and brothers of the same gentlemen were equally successful with the ball. Mr Garforth made a brilliant catch at point. For the Muffs Messrs Lechner and Nelson trundled well, and Mr Lechner made the".'only double figures on his side, Mr Brown fielding at point remarkably well. The pitch was made on cocoa-nut matting, which was found to answer very well. Host Patten supplied the visitors; with a lunch, which was much appreciated.
