MR PURNELL’S MEETING.

To toe Editor. Sib, —At Mr Purnell’s meeting on Tuesday evening, at the Town Hall, % motion was proposed by Mr Baker and seconded by myself, to the effect that a vote of thanks be accorded to Mr Purnell. An amendment was then proposed tendering the compliment that he was a fit and proper person to represent Wakanui. The amendment was put and declared carried. Now, sir, many persona abstained from voting for or against the amendment, as they were anxious to give Air T*urneli the compliment of thanks. The chairman, however, did not put the motion, and hence the amendment being carried. No doubt this was an oversight, but it prevented the right expression of the feeling of the meeting being taken.—l am, etc., William Ckooks. Ashburton, Nov. 23. [Our correspondent’s letter has been unfortunately mislaid, or it would have been published earlier. The chairman was perfectly right, as it was not necessary to put the original resolution if an amendment so widely different was carried, by a majority of those present.— Ed. (?.]
